My name is Tony Noble. I am an artist and teacher living and working in Batley, West Yorkshire, England.

‘Tony Noble : Made in Batley’ was the title of my first one man show at the Leeds Design Innovation Centre at 46 The Calls, Leeds,in June 2002. It included paintings, prints and drawings all centred around life in Batley, and featured a series of portraits of children from Batley Parish School. (I have been teaching at the school for the past 15 years.)

I hope the pictures successfully reflect upon some of the more joyful, positive aspects of life in Batley, and that they will be seen as a celebration of childhood in a happy, diverse school community. All too often we hear that ‘Batley is a dump’. What I hope to show in this exhibition is that if we scratch just a little below the surface of our town we can uncover aspects of beauty which are worthy of celebration. Of course there is lots of room for improvement, but what I hope to show is that it is not all bad.
